How should I sharpen with Jasper?Jasper is a very strong durable stone. It never needs to be flattened again once we finishing lapping out the saw marks, because it is harder than steel and will not dish out as you sharpen with it. Jasper whetstones can be used with water, oil or sharpened upon dry. How the stone is surfaced changes its cutting properties, so if you want your stone shipped to you dual sided please let me know in the order notes. These jasper's are very dense and rich in grit whetstones. The extreme hardness of the jasper allows it to work as a versatile sharpening stone. The stone doesn't dish out, instead the surface conditioning changes based on how loaded with steel the stone is AND ALSO, what ever you lap the surface with can help change the cutting speed. You don't have to actually flatten the stone again, this methoud is simply to remove steel from the stone, and abrade away a minimal ammount of stone to expose fresh grit. If you already have other softer slurry stones, or diamond plates you can try dressing and slurrying your jasper with these stones to excellent effect. Jasper is so hard it doesn't release any slurry on its own so it is an excellent hard base stone to pair with other abrasvive mediums also known as slurry stones or nagura stones... You dont need slurry stones its just one popular style of honing. Personally I find a diamond plate that is a mellow grit and worn in like an old DMT 325 8C to be my perfect choice. This stone sharpens very fast and fine very when slurried with a fine or worn in diamond plate, this kicks up an ultra fine slurry rich in abbrasives, like silicates, quartz and garnet. This puree of microscopic gemstones provides a fast polishing action and high levels of refinement. This is my favorite way to work with slurry, because the diamond plate cleans the pores of your stone when you make the slurry so the surface cuts faster, also the slurry is perfectly matched to your base stone. If your knife is dull I recommend you sharpen with one side of your jasper stone lapped between 80 to 220 grit. You can do this dry, or with water. Oil is optional. You can use a diamond plate for setting and refreshing this surface prep. Or the cheap route is to use silicon carbide sand paper. When the jasper whetstones are textured with a rough surface grit, they actually hold some of that charracter as well and can be used to do minor grinding and corretion work to a beat up edge. While you develope a new bevel edge on a dull knife remember this, it should shave arm hair right off of the coarse side of the stone, before you move to a higher polishing grit technique with your finely lapped, or loaded with steel side of the jasper used for finishing type honing. SO, once and only once you can feel sharpness / burr switch to the finer side of your stone and polish your edge till its mirror finished and razor sharp. Jasper is a very engaging stone and you will see metal removed every sharpening stroke. To eek out the finest finish, burnish the entire surface of the whole stone by sharpening on it a lot, and only occasionally dressing it with a mellow or fine diamond plate.

How should I sharpen with Jade?Jade is extremly strong and durable stone. It never needs to be flattened because it is harder than steel and will not dish out as you sharpen with it. This lends the stone to also be able to be prepaired to multiple different sharpening grit's. Jade that is not polished can sharpen very coarse and agressively! So if you do not want your jade whetstone totally polished, send us a note to make it dual grit. What makes jade a good sharpening stone? Well first of all don't be confused by people who have used SERPENTINE stones and think it is jade. Serpentine is a close fake but it is a lot softer than jade so it can be scratched or gouged into. True jade however will only have a very small percentage of the mineral serpentine in it, and so the surface will be 99.9% impervious to gouging or scratches from sharpening. Try not to drop it, but jade is also super resistant to impact and very hard to break or cleave. Don't worry too much if you do drop it. Jade can take a hit! This stone is the only material that makes a nearly indistriuctible sharpening stone, jade is the most impact resistant stone their is. Diamonds are harder when it comes to scratching and sanding abilities, but jade is way tougher. Jade whetstones can be used with water, oil or sharpened upon dry. How the stone is surfaced changes its cutting properties, so if you want your stone shipped to you dual sided please let me know in the order notes. If your knife is dull I recommend you sharpen with one side of your Jade stone lapped between 80 to 220 grit. You can do this dry, or with water. Oil is optional. You can use a diamond plate for setting and refreshing this surface prep. Or the cheap route is to use silicon carbide sand paper. Just don't accidently sand off the polish on the finer side of your pendant! We spend many hours working on buffing and polishing. If you do accidentally mess up the surface preperation and need assistance you can message us for any questions you have or send the stone in for a spa treatment. Once you develope a new bevel edge and can feel sharpness / burr switch to the finer side of your stone and polish your edge till its mirror finished and razor sharp. Jade is a very engaging stone and you will see metal removed every sharpening stroke.

Do these stones need to be flattened before use?The stones I make come precision made within very tight parameters. These stones come lapped perfectly flat and ready to sharpen with straight out of the box. The jasper stone is so hard that it loads up with metal and will not gouge out or dish. With use you will notice the jasper stones loads up with steel. When you want it to polish steel a bit faster it can be lapped lightly with a worn out diamond plate to open up the cutting action again. Resurfacing the stone like this is quick and easy since it is already flat, and it stays that way no matter how much you sharpen on it. Consider keeping your stones dual sided, meaning lapped differently on each surface. This lets you cover all bases in sharpening, one side can do coarser work when lapped to say 80-220 grit and your other side will polish extremely fine lapped between 325-600 grit.
